In the age of AI

Check AI answers against official sources

ChatGPT and other AI tools answer fast, but sometimes miss things or use old numbers. Check in three steps:

  1. 01Ask for the source. “Which official page is this from?”
  2. 02Check the official site. IRS and SSA links are in our Official Resources section.
  3. 03Check the date. Tax amounts and limits change every year.
Official resources
Example: right, but incomplete

My mother in Mongolia gave me $120,000. Do I owe tax on it?

The AI answered No. In the US, the person who receives a gift doesn't pay tax on it.
Checked on IRS.gov Right — no tax. But gifts of more than $100,000 in a year from a foreign person must be reported to the IRS on Form 3520. Miss it, and the penalty can reach 25% of the gift. IRS — Gifts from foreign person
